Well, it's been a while since the last post.

Work's been busy and connectivity has been lousy here at the house. A lot of complaining about the service provider, but it just turned out to be a loose USB connector.
But my health has been good. I continue to feel strong and energetic. The only problem is that I continue to slowly add on weight. Combine that with lack of exercise and I'm just another damned couch potato.
My last check up was three months ago when I also endured another Glofil test. The results were great, showing improved kidney function over the last two appointments. In fact the creatine clearance was the lowest since before the onslaught of the BK Virus two years ago. I go back in the morning, I hope the results stay the same!
Best wishes to all those who find this blog. I hope that it is a helpful voice. It is gratifying to see the number of Google Searches for BK Virus, Fistula, Ankle Swelling, Adjusting to Dialysis and PKD that reach this blog. I wish that I could have a voice that had been through it when I was wading through those waters.

Hi Dave read your prior posts about BK. just 4 months s/ p kidney transplant from me to my husband, BKVN was found upon biopsy. He is beginning Cidofovir today. What were your side effects? And did medical insurance cover this drug?
ReplyDeleteHi, Dave here. Congratulations on your transplant, sorry to hear about the BKV. Such a high/low. I found BKV almost as depressing as PKD. It took me a while to realize what the side effects were and it's hard for me to know what was caused by kidney damage from BKV or from the Cidofovir or my severe reaction to the gamma globulin, but I experienced some hair thinning, fatigue and an erratic palate (an issue, since I am in the wine business!) My kidney function is not perfect. I have to work to control blood pressure, I experienced weight gain, ankle swelling, and my creatinine has stabilizid around 3.0. That's the new norm. I did not realize it at the time, but Cidofovir is chemotherapy, I thought it was humerous when I saw it listed as such on the IV bag because my doctors did not call it chemotherapy. It is a toxin, but it happens to kill the virus quicker than the body. My wife just started chemo for breast cancer, that has changed my thinking in the last few days. Thanks for the question, I think I will restate all this in a blog post.
